Savannah

Updated: Aug 4, 2019

Savannah was a lovely quaint town with beautifully antebellum architecture and a rich colonial past. The city prides itself on its grid system centred around 24 squares and its grand antebellum houses that sit on the squares. The riverfront street is a level below the rest of the city and is accessed by historic steps or a cobbled road. The area is notably industrial being the second largest shipping port in the USA.

We spent a day and a half in Savannah. Usually we are very independent travellers and we try not to succumb to tourist traps but this was particularly hard in Savannah, everywhere we looked there were trolley tours and walking tours. The heat was stifling as a heatwave hit the city and we decided to take the tours. We went on a trolley ride that took you round 15 stops in the city and told you some information about the surroundings, we went on a ghost tour and a river boat ride. As we enjoy walking a lot we regretted taking a trolley rather than just using our own two feet to explore the sites. The ghost tour was a fun evening activity and the river boat ride on the Georgia Queen was a really relaxing activity and a nice way to see the waterfront and beyond.
