Washington and the train to NYC - Amtrak

Updated: Aug 7, 2019

Washington D.C; the final stop on our East Coast road trip. We organised to drop our car in Washington Downtown and headed straight in to the main sights. Alamo held onto our luggage for us. We were really surprised to stumble across a farmer’s market only 100 meters away from the Washington Memorial. It was small and local feeling and had benches and tables set up in the shade to enjoy the food and drink. We had shrimp and grits and I had a massive pink lemonade slush that really helped to keep me cool. Unfortunately, the Washington memorial was closed, they were installing a new lift. We were however, able to see the Lincoln memorial, the reflecting pool, the White House, the National World War II Memorial, and the Capitol building. Everything you want to see in Washington D.C is basically right next to each other which was really ideal for us when we did not have a lot of time. I really noticed the presence of Lime, Jump, Byrd and Uber scooters; I would definitely recommend downloading an app before going so you have the option to jump on one and scoot along to your next sight. We really enjoyed walking around all of the landmarks and soaking in all of the sights.

We stayed in the Washington Hilton, about 15 minutes’ drive out from the tourist sights. The hotel was ginormous and located in an area called Kalorama. Despite the hotel being massive, the neighbourhood was really small and buzzing with lots of great restaurants and locals out enjoying themselves.

We woke up the next morning and got an Uber to the train station. Washington D.C Union Station was unexpectantly beautiful. The building was huge and white and ornate like the White House and the Capitol Building. The interior looked like it was straight out of The Great Gatsby. It was also surprisingly quiet. Rail is known to be a lesser developed method of transport in the United States, Union Station is the only rail station in the capitol and it appeared our train was the only one running at that present time. We were really pleased with our decision to get the train straight into Manhattan rather than attempt to navigate the busy roads approaching NYC. We were able to walk a couple of blocks from Penn station to our hotel and enjoy our last few days in the states.
