The Hampton Plantation was en route out of Charleston by about an hour as we headed up the coast towards Wilmington. We stopped here on recommendation and found it a lovely stop. The site is small and state run, meaning it didn’t have that capitalist commercial air of trying hard to be something its not. The reason we chose to visit Hampton was because the original house of the plantation still stands. It is a beautiful, grand white house and although unfurnished still held a lot of insights into life as a plantation owner. There was a tour of the house and information boards to read. There is also the Washington Tree, named after the American president from when he visited the house. This plantation grew rice, cultivated and managed by enslaved African people who knew the practice from farming rice in their home countries. This plantation was inexpensive, authentic and without Hollywood frills. The only downside is that we were eaten alive by mosquitoes while we were here.
