2 Days in Miami

Updated: Aug 4, 2019

What a fantastic city. We spent 2 days in Miami and absolutely loved it. My mum and I stayed in South Beach, Miami Beach in a hotel called The Julia; it was one street back from Ocean Drive and that was enough to keep us away from the noise of the night life.

When I thought of Miami I imagined it to be quite tacky, trashy and centred around the night life. It was nothing like I imagined. The whole place had a really upmarket vibe. I loved the beach walkway, the iconic life guard stations on the beach and all the artistic flare of the extensive Art Deco district.

We arrived in to Miami International Airport and took the metro bus to South Beach. It cost $2.25 and took about 30 minutes. We arrived to drop our luggage at our hotel at about midday.

Renting a Citibike by the half hour is a really popular thing to do in South Beach. Citibikes ports are all along the beach walkway and the bikes are really accessible. You don’t need an app or an account, just a debit or credit card to insert into the machine. We cycled along the beach walkway and admired the beach as well as the Art Deco architecture on Ocean Drive. We stopped in at the information centre on Ocean Drive and visited the Art Deco centre shop.

The Wynwood Walls. Wynwood is a really buzzing and atmospheric neighbourhood across the water from Miami Beach in Miami. It has lots of independent shops and restaurants as well as the famous Wynwood Walls. The walls are known for their street art that makes the neighbourhood famous.

Little Havana. This neighbourhood was created by Cubans fleeing Fidel Castro’s regime in Cuba. The neighbourhood centres around the street Calle Otto and is full of Cuban charm.

Dip in the Ocean. South Beach is known for its expansive beach lined with the iconic lifeguard posts painted and decorated in a range of colours and styles.

South Point Pier. The pier is at the southern point of Miami Beach and allows views right over Miami Beach on one side and views of the Miami skyline on the other.

South Beach Holocaust Memorial. We spent an hour looking around this beautiful memorial.

Botanicals Gardens

The South Beach Holocaust Memorial is right next to the botanical gardens. They are small but lovely. They have their own turtles and Iguana and are a really relaxing spot for a sit down and a break.

Viscaya house

This stately home was created for the farm machinery mogul James Deering in the early 1900s. It is now a museum and gardens open to the public. The home is packed with charming details and interesting artefacts, the grounds and gardens are beautiful and the whole place is created in the imagine of an Aristocratic European manor
