VIVA

VIVA is inspired by light and life. The inspiration for my luminaire design came from the buildings I saw around me in Melbourne. I noticed the eclectic mix of architecture in Melbourne’s urban sprawl. The modernist style evolves as the city shapes itself with new expansion and development; attempting to keep up with the city’s growing population. I was reminded of the architecture I saw at home, in the UK, and the modernist buildings that became landmarks in our society. I am drawn to brutalist architecture and how the shapes and cuts create dense shadow and bright light. I was influenced by prominent brutalist and modernist architects such as Eileen Gray, Lina Bo Bardi, Zaha Hadid, Chamberlin, Powell and Bon (The Barbican) when creating my own design. I am hoping to achieve a design that can be incorporated into the modern Melbourne home. The structure is formed of panel saw cut 16mm MDF, to create a solid façade and deep shadows. The MDF is spray-painted with Dulux Duramax Granite Effect spray paint to create the familiar concrete finish of many modern buildings. The cuts in the material are designed to direct stark shards of light towards minimalist white walls. I chose the name VIVA, meaning ‘live’, because of the vivacity and expansion in Melbourne that inspired my lighting design.
