The area I stayed in for my time in New York was Williamsburg in Brooklyn. I decided to stay in Brooklyn as my auntie’s friend I visited on 4/5 of my days in New York lives and works in Brooklyn. The city is easy and inexpensive to move around so I wasn’t too worried about staying right near the centre. Williamsburg claims to be New York city’s most up and coming neighbourhood. It’s known as the most hipster, trendy neighbourhood in New York. I kept walking around the wrong areas and wasn’t really sure what people were on about... it didn’t seem hip or trendy at all; it was a regular New York residential area. I found the epicentre when I walked down towards the Hudson. The main streets are called Driggs Street and Bedford Avenue. The area is filled with cool cafes, brunch spots, restaurants with little back courtyards, up and coming designers and the nicest Wholefoods I have ever seen. I went to the Rabbithole cafe on Bedford Avenue which I would recommend for brunch and Sweetwater Cafe for dinner. Continuing to walk down to the river you reach Domino Park. This was one of my favourite places in New York. It’s a newly created park focused on activities; there’s a beach volleyball court, boules areas, kids play park, water features that were always full of local children playing in their swimsuits, an elevated board walk, loungers and a taco restaurant. The park is set in front of the old Domino sugar factory and the best bit is that it has the most amazing view of the Manhattan skyline. The area is gentrifying and developing really quickly with new residences springing up and greater capacity being added to the subway. I would definitely recommend it as an area to see if you want to experience the less touristy side of New York.
