AVOCADO

ON TOAST

Avocadoes are the delicious and versatile much loved fruit of our generation. However, avocadoes are so sought after that the demand for them is pushing farmers to increase the use of pesticides, fertilisers and vital water reserves in their crops as well as encroach on mature forests and partake in illegal deforestation.

BANANAS

Bananas are a great grab-and-go snack, offering an energy boost as well as vital nutrients like potassium and dietary fibre. Bananas are the single most profitable item sold in UK supermarkets (BananaLink), however little of this affluence reaches the banana farmers themselves, with farmers being paid on average 75p per eight-hour shift. 47% of the world’s cultivated bananas are the monoculture Cavendish banana; virtually all of the bananas supplied to the US and UK markets are the Cavendish banana (Food And Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations); this lack of diversity is leading to disease (Sigatoka) within the cultivar.

CHICKEN

Swap a chicken based meal for a vegan alternative. Chicken is a lean and bland meat, making it popular all over the world. This popularity has had detrimental effects on the welfare standards adopted by farmers. 96% of UK chickens are kept in barns and cages, being subjected to hormones, antibiotics, a lack of sunlight and high levels of stress. Unless our consumer demands change theses practices will continue.
